Stepping Up Your Game, LaVeta Plein Air Event

Are you a painter, maybe a student painter, trying to gain confidence?

I am addressing my students mostly, but if that title rings a bell for you, try stretching your skills a bit and think about entering a plein air event this summer. In Colorado there are small, non-juried events all summer in almost every part of the state. They attract local artists and sometimes a big fish will enter and raise the bar a bit, but getting your feet wet at a small event can do wonders for your confidence. These events help encourage artists, not discourage them and if you are willing to submit, and later allow the judge to critique your work -
in my opinion, that is worth the price of admission.

The LaVeta Plein Air Event is just such an event.  Hosted by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, it is Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16 and the registration fee is very small.
Each artist has their supports (canvas, panels or whatever) marked at registration on Friday morning and then they head out into the landscape to paint. On Saturday afternoon artists frame the work that they want to enter into the show, and yes the work is framed wet.  At 2 pm all the work is turned in and hung in the gallery for judging and the weekend wraps up with an awards reception on Saturday evening - with cash awards, food, the camaraderie of fellow painters and the knowledge that you have stepped up to a new level.

Plein Air Workshop - JUNE 21

Join me for a Plein Air workshop:
Monday, June 21 from 10 am to 1 pm, in LaVeta, Colorado at the Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery.
The focus is on design, and of course, color interpretation in the landscape; all en plein air in beautiful LaVeta, Colorado.
The workshop price is $35. and is part of their Colorado Expressions Celebration. Information is posted on the Spanish Peaks Arts Council website or call the Gallery there at 719-742-3074 to register.

If you have never been to LaVeta, this is a great chance to paint in one of the most charming towns in Southern Colorado and destination of the Scenic Rio Grande Railroad that runs from Alamosa to LaVeta, through some of Colorado's most beautiful scenery.

The painting above, "Barn Dance" was done at the Colorado Mountain Plein Air Fest '09 and just SOLD in the Nomadas del Arte show at Southwest Gallery in Dallas, Texas.

"Food As Art" at the SPACe Gallery

This is lovely LaVeta, in the shadow of the Spanish Peaks.
Eight members of the San Luis Valley Painters entered work in the "Food as Art" Show hosted by the Spanish Peaks Arts Council and Saturday evening, 7 of us went up to LaVeta for the opening. In keeping with the FOOD theme the featured ART was the party food, catered for the event by Teresa Quiroga. Bravo!

The food got a lot of attention but eventually we got around to looking at the art: painting, fiber work, photography, as well as 3 dimensional works were featured. My vote for ARTIST's Choice went to the party food. Very Nice!
Thanks to the SPACe Galley for hosting the event and kudos to all the San Luis Valley Painters who entered.
Don't forget - Coming in June is the Colorado Expressions Show presented by the SPanish Peaks Arts Council. This Juried event always draws top artists from all over Colorado. May 22 is the entry deadline and the form for that can be found at their website. Click here.

Plein Air Workshop in LaVeta, in June

I get asked about workshops a lot: Do I do them? - when, where?
The answers
are - Yes! - Not often, - but always in the landscape.

I have a Plein Air workshop coming up - Monday, June 21 from 10 am to 1 pm, at the Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery, or SPACe, in LaVeta, CO.
I will focus on design, and of course, color interpretation in the landscape; all en plein air in beautiful LaVeta, Colorado.
The workshop price is $35. and is part of their Colorado Expressions Celebration. Information will be posted on their website at Spanish Peaks Arts Council and registration will be handled through SPACe.

If you have never been to LaVeta, this is a great chance to paint in one of the most charming towns in Southern Colorado and destination of the Scenic Rio Grande Railroad that runs from Alamosa to LaVeta, through some of Colorado's most beautiful scenery.

The painting above, "Barn Dance" was just in the Nomadas del Arte show that opened April 9th at Southwest Gallery in Dallas, Texas - and I am happy to say that it SOLD.

"Food As Art" at the SPACe Gallery

As far as I'm concerned, when anyone prepares food - it's art - so, in my book, a potluck could be considered a full blown art show.
Thus, the Spanish Peaks Art Council's up coming show - Food As Art,
is open to all kinds of interpretation.
These two class demos, done in a 6"x 6" format will be my entries and though my demos very seldom see the light of day beyond this blog - these two fit the bill.
May 1st is the opening Reception, from 5-7 pm in LaVeta, Colorado - and there is guaranteed to be good art and good food.

Merit Award at PAINT COLORADO

Winning is always fun! My "Zapata Aspens" took a Merit Award at the PAINT COLORADO Show that opened in LaVeta on Saturday night.
Tim Deibler, noted Colorado painter, judged the show and was at the reception, which certainly added something special to the evening.
Tim is an astute critic and teacher, and was willing to talk about our pieces - if we wanted to hear. Having your work "criticized" may not sound like fun, but having a master/painter and judge tell you exactly why your painting worked, or not - SO worth it.
For me, this was the highlight, and most valuable part of the evening.
As an aside, we did not talk about this piece, but my other entry, "PileUp on LaVeta". Tim Deibler was also a Juror for the PAAC Show that opened at the Abend Gallery in Denver last weekend. He looked at over 300 paintings entered in that show, remembered mine, and could speak directly and knowledgeably about them. Thanks Tim.

PAINT COLORADO at SPACe Gallery

The PAINT COLORADO show at the SPACe (Spanish Peaks Arts Council) Gallery, in LaVeta, opens this Saturday, July 18th with a reception from 5 - 7 pm. The SPACe Gallery always hangs a good show and Tim Deibler will be judging which certainly adds luster to the festivities. Alamosa painters Judith Greenwood and Heidi Algrim, as well as myself, were juried into "Paint Colorado" and we are headed over to LaVeta on Saturday for a little afternoon painting and some par T time at SPACe Gallery in the evening. If you are in the area, that would be within 100 miles, this is a great excuse to visit charming and beautiful LaVeta and view paintings with a Colorado bent.
Shown here are the pieces that I entered: Zapata Aspens, 12"x 9" and PileUp on LaVeta, 12"x 16".
View the winners on the Spanish Peaks website - Click on this link to SPACe Gallery.

Happy New Year

It has been awhile since I posted but the year started off with a flurry of snow, freezing weather, and lots to do. Fellow painter, Heidi Algrim and myself, braved the LaVeta Pass road last Sunday to take work to the (SPACe) Spanish Peaks Arts Council Gallery for the Members Show. We made it in good shape, I am happy to report. This will be a great little show with artists from throughout the region. More information is available on the website http://www.spanishpeaksarts.org/2009_shows_events/memb_show.htm . I hope to see you at the reception this Sunday, Jan. 11 between 4 and 6 pm. My painting "Conejos Walk", 48"x36", from last Spring, will be on display as well as 2 plein air pieces.
